The Pleasure of Being a Good Boy: Why Obedience Training is so Delicious
Two little words. Good boy. Hardly remarkable, are they? And yet, spoken by the right woman, they can have an extraordinary effect on a grown man. A gentleman who might ordinarily bristle at being addressed as a boy suddenly finds himself quite ridiculously pleased to hear it.
How wonderfully peculiar.
What fascinates Me is the contradiction. Outside the world of domination, being called a boy might suggest immaturity, inexperience or a lack of authority. Hardly qualities most gentlemen aspire to. Yet within a particular relationship, the very same words can become a source of considerable pleasure. The meaning has changed, although the words have not.
So what exactly is happening?
We tend to think of praise as a reward for doing something well. But good boy is rather different from well done. The latter acknowledges an accomplishment; the former says something about the person receiving it. It is not simply that you have performed a task to My satisfaction. For that moment, you have become someone who pleases Me.
And perhaps that distinction is more important than it first appears.
There is a particular vulnerability in allowing another person to decide whether you have been good. Not because you are incapable of judging your own behaviour, but because you have willingly made Her judgement matter. You may know perfectly well that you have followed an instruction correctly. Yet knowing it yourself is not quite the same as hearing Me acknowledge it.
You want the recognition, darling. And you want it from Me.
This is where obedience training becomes psychologically interesting. A submissive might begin by following instructions because he enjoys the experience of surrendering control. But over time, the motivation can change. He is no longer simply interested in doing what he is told. He becomes interested in understanding what pleases his Mistress, and in discovering whether he can earn Her approval without having to ask for it.
There is an important difference between compliance and devotion. The first requires an instruction. The second requires attention.
And attention, I find, is considerably more revealing. Anyone can carry out a command, but noticing what matters to another person requires curiosity, observation and a genuine interest in their pleasure. A submissive who remembers some small preference I mentioned in passing may impress Me far more than one who executes an elaborate instruction flawlessly. One has done what was asked. The other has been thinking about Me when I wasn’t there.
Now, which do you suppose I find more interesting?
Of course, devotion introduces a rather delicious complication. The more closely you attend to My preferences, the more you reveal your own. Your eagerness, your patience, your little disappointments when you fail to impress Me quite as much as you had hoped. You may believe you are learning how to please Me, but I am learning a great deal about you in return.
And there is something rather amusing about a gentleman who sets out to demonstrate his obedience, only to discover just how transparent his desire for approval has become.
Perhaps that is the real pleasure of being a good boy. Not simply being praised, but being understood by someone whose opinion you have chosen to value. To have your efforts noticed, your intentions recognised and, occasionally, your carefully maintained composure disturbed by two perfectly innocent words.
So tell Me, darling, do you want to be obedient?
Or do you want to be the sort of boy who knows what would please Me before I even have to ask?
